Cast
Aang
Aang is the last Airbender and only known survivor of the Air Nomads. His destiny is to learn the art of the Avatar and defeat the Fire Lord of the Fire Nation. Because Aang is the Avatar, he has a connection with nature as well as animals. If he’s lost, Aang is able to “listen” to the spirits of the trees, rivers, and mountains who “tell” him which way to go. But rather than save the world, Aang searches for adventure. He is a trickster and longs for a life full of fun experiences. Voiced by Zach Tyler Eisen.
Katara
Katara is a caring and passionate 14-year-old girl. Kindness and empathy are her most endearing traits. Katara longs to become a Master Waterbender in order to save her tribe. She practices Waterbending every day, adapting it to the basic Airbending philosophy and stances that Aang teaches her. Her mother died when she was 8 years old, so she was forced to grow up fast. Katara wears her mother’s necklace as a reminder of her nurturing spirit. Katara is very mature and responsible for her age and always plays the mediator between the often bickering Aang and Sokka, her brother. Voiced by Mae Whitman.
Sokka
Sokka is a bullheaded, sarcastic teenager who believes that his way is the only way. He shows the strength and determination of a warrior, but lacks the experience and wisdom to use them effectively. Sokka’s goal in life is to reunite with his father, so that together they may exact revenge against the Fire Nation for destroying their tribe. His most prized possession is a boomerang, a traditional weapon of his Water Tribe, which his father bequeathed to him before leaving the tribe. Voiced by Jack De Sena.
Appa
Appa is a giant bison hybrid who was frozen with Aang for 100 years. He can also fly so he can often be seen transporting Aang, Katara, and Sokka from one adventure to another! Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
Zuko
Prince Zuko is the son of Fire Lord Ozai, ruler of the Fire Nation, and the great-grandson of Fire Lord Sozin, who conceived the war. He is an incredibly focused teenage Firebender who bullies and intimidates everyone around him. When Prince Zuko was 14, he spoke out against his father and the Fire Nation’s conquest, which cost him the throne and got him banished from his homeland. His mission is to return with the Avatar, dead or alive. He believes Firebending is the most dominant art and can never be bested by Water, Earth, or Airbending. Zuko’s teenage overconfidence makes him think he’s invincible. Voiced by Dante Basco.
Uncle Iroh
Uncle Iroh is Zuko’s retirement-age guardian who’s no longer interested in great adventures. Instead, he spends his days trying to find peace and quiet through meditation, calligraphy, and drinking tea. But Zuko always interrupts him just as he’s about to reach a moment of Zen. Uncle is the main source of humor on Zuko’s ship, his deadpan delivery providing a great contrast to Zuko’s intensity and brashness. Iroh was once a great warrior, nicknamed the Dragon of the West. He is part of a secret society called the White Lotus which includes master benders and non-benders from all nations with the goal of maintaining balance and supporting the Avatar.
Toph
Toph was born blind, but grew up learning to adapt and thrive. A powerful earthbender, she’s stubborn, uninhibited, exuberantly self-confident, and loves to say and do whatever she pleases. She hates formalities, rituals, and fancy stuff (like shoes). Toph has no patience with other people telling her what to do, but she’s more than happy to boss others around. Used to being underestimated, she uses people’s misperceptions of her to gain an advantage over them. A human lie detector, she can sense the slightest changes in people’s heartbeats and breathing. Toph often hides her feelings with humor and bravado, but with the right person, she’ll open up and show her vulnerable side.
Momo
Momo is a winged-lemur – a hybrid of the spotted bat and the black and white lemur. Like all of his species, Momo is incredibly intelligent and trainable. Opposable thumbs on his hands and feet allow him to perform many human tasks. However, Momo neither talks nor acts like a human. To Aang, Momo is a symbol of hope that his people are still alive. The winged-lemur was once a favorite pet of the Air Nomad’s children and Aang’s spirit is rejuvenated when he discovers this living relic from his lost people. Aang devotes a large part of his attention and energy to training and playing with Momo.
Azula
Azula grew up as the favored child of her father, Fire Lord Ozai. A firebending prodigy, Azula became convinced that she was far more worthy of the throne than her brother Zuko. Over the years, her firebending evolved to become more intense, symbolized by her blue flames, and she mastered lightning generation. Cunning, cruel, and confident, Azula is a born leader who uses fear and intimidation to get people to fall in line. She won’t hesitate to jump into a one-on-one fight, but often prefers manipulating someone’s emotions to force them into submission. Azula’s bold attitude masks the scars of a troubled upbringing, and her desire for power threatens to consume her altogether.
Ty Lee
Ty Lee is a master chi-blocker who can strike the body’s pressure points and immobilize benders and non-benders alike. In contrast to her intense powers, Ty Lee is bubbly, energetic, affectionate, and adores all things pretty and cute. She’s always eager to read the color of a person’s aura, which might seem silly, but it’s driven by her genuine curiosity about people. However, don’t let her perky demeanor fool you––she is loyal to her friends and will take down anyone who poses a threat. As a longtime friend of Azula, Ty Lee joins in her hunt for Zuko.
