Each month we will be shining a light on different dog breeds in our series, Dog Breed of the Month. Next up, we take a look at the fluffy Chow Chow dogs.

"Chow Chows are a medium-sized utility breed best known for their mane-like fur and being one of the only types of dog to have a blue-black tongue instead of pink. They first came over to Britain in the 18th century from China, and were originally used for guarding, herding, and hunting," Shauna Walsh, PDSA Veterinary Nurse, tells Country Living.

"When choosing a puppy, look for a breeder who health tests their dogs, and ask about the medical history of the parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. Due to their potential health conditions, we would recommend getting pet insurance for your Chow Chow."

Is the Chow Chow a good house dog?

Chows Chows are excellent family dogs, however they aren't particularly known for their playfulness. In addition to their independent streak, Chows Chows may be aloof, and aren't a breed known for being an affectionate lap-dog.

"Chow Chows have a natural instinct to protect, so can be incredibly loyal to their owners and therefore sometimes wary of strangers," says Shauna. "As with any dog, it's really important your Chow Chow is well-socialised from a young age to make sure they're happy meeting new people and dogs."

How big are Chow Chow dogs?

Chow Chows are medium-sized dogs, ranging in height from 17 to 20 inches and in weight from 50 pounds to 75 pounds (23 to 34 kilograms). As with size, there is also a difference in weight between male and female Chow Chows.

Are Chow Chow dogs hypoallergenic?

No, Chow Chows are not hypoallergenic dogs. Their bear-like coats have the tendency to shed all year round, making them unsuitable to individuals who are allergic to dogs.

How much exercise does a Chow Chow need?

While they aren't high energy dogs, Chow Chows need between 45 — 60 minutes of exercise a day.

Shauna continues: "Chow Chows are really clever and can get bored easily, so in addition to their regular daily exercise, they will enjoy puzzle toys and short training sessions to keep their minds occupied. Their strong hunting instinct means recall training is a must, as they can easily get distracted whilst out on a walk."

"Additionally, owners will need to pay close attention to any skin folds (which can be hidden by their thick coat) as they could develop an infection if not kept clean."
