Zen Pet

The above cartoon about a very zen pet is a collaboration between myself and a Canadian chap by the name of Martin. He’s been sending me joke ideas here and there over the years and I’ve used a few. When you’ve been trying to write a joke each day for more than 3 decades, you appreciate any help you can get.

Martin’s contribution to this cartoon was the expression, “the sound of one hound clapping.” He didn’t know how I could use it, he just substituted the word “hand” for “hound” and thought it was funny. I thought so, too, but it took me weeks to think of a fluid way to present the pun. I really like the final cartoon, though, so it was worth the extra thinking time. Thanks, Martin!

Right now, some of you are thinking that maybe you should send me your cartoon idea(s). You’re welcome to do that via the comments section of this blog, or via a DM on Facebook or whatever. Just know that you’re donating it without expectation of compensation or credit, and also be aware that there’s only a very tiny chance I’ll use your joke. What seems like a funny thing to say or think isn’t always funny in the right way for a single panel cartoon.

Of the cartoon above, some readers are going to say, “What’s it mean?”

To them, I would say, “Look up ‘the sound of one hand clapping’.”

Others might say, “Is that supposed to be a lesbian couple? Why do you have to shove that stuff down our throats in the Sunday comics where children can see it?”

To which I would say, “You are an imaginary bigot in my head and I’m not going to dignify that kind of stupidity with a response. Thank GOD there are fewer of you people around every day.”

And then the imaginary bigot in my head would say, “I’m sorry, you’re right. I don’t know why I’m so hateful. I’m going to stop being a jackass and do something to make the world a better place. Like vote blue this November!”

I find that imaginary bigots are the best kind because you can actually get through to them.

Now let’s find out what things were going through Wayno’s imagination this week as evidenced by these Bizarro cartoons…

It’s sad that millions of children today don’t even know what Silly Putty is and that you could copy the newspaper comics with it. Even sadder, though, is the billions of children born before Silly Putty or comics were even invented. So much sadness.

Good boy! Good Gatsby!

Such a violent way of saying “I don’t know.”

The talented and late cartoonist, John Callahan, wrote that he was so excited to meet Bob Dylan that the first thing he said was, “I write songs, too!” I love that story.

I used to play that game quite a lot and the brain is always the hardest thing to get out.

I think this might be my favorite gag of the week. Wayno explains in his weekly cartoon blog post that this gag is based on the old comic book ads about learning to draw. The very sexy example he includes makes you wonder why anyone wouldn’t want to be an artist!

Well, Jazz Pickles, the getaway car is pulling back into the garage. Thanks for hitting the humor bank with us. If you’d like to support our efforts to keep this blog free of ads or paywalls, please take a moment to toss a dime into one of the links below. We here at Rancho Bizarro will dance a jig in your honor.

Until next time, be smart, be grateful, be kind, and find something to laugh about every day—even if only maniacally.
