AKP STAFF

Won Bin made his debut in 1997 with the KBS drama 'Propose' and rose to stardom with the drama 'Autumn in My Heart.' Since then, he has appeared in various films such as 'Taegukgi,' 'My Brother,' 'Mother,' and 'The Man From Nowhere,' solidifying his position as one of the top actors in South Korea.

The films that Won Bin had been in previously were box office hits but 'The Man From Nowhere' wrote new history in the Korean film industry as it became the highest-grossing film in 2010 with 6.2 million tickets sold. This action film was well-received in South Korea as well as overseas, such as the U.S. 'The Man From Nowhere' is still seen as the best Korean action film even after eleven years since its release.

Unfortunately, this film also marks the final on-screen appearance of Won Bin as he has yet to have filmed any new movies or dramas in the past eleven years. According to the actor, he has felt overwhelmed and pressured when choosing his next work due to the immense popularity of 'The Man From Nowhere.' Hence, his fans were not able to see Won Bin in action for the past decade.

However, that doesn't mean Won Bin had not been looking at scripts and considering roles. It's just that the pressure he has felt has led him to turn down some of the most legendary roles in recent years. So here are some of the legendary and impressionable roles that Won Bin could have played.

1. 'Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds' - Gang Rim

'Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds' became a box office hit as it the theaters. This fantasy-action film that was originally based on a webtoon tells the story of three grim reapers escorting a man through the seven stages of judgment in the afterworld. The film won various awards as it also sold over 10 million tickets.

Won Bin was originally offered the role of Gang Rim, which was played by actor Ha Jung Woo in the film, but ultimately turned down the role because he felt he did not fit the role too well.

2. 'Descendants of the Sun' - Yoo Shi Jin

'Descendants of the Sun' is one of the most renowned dramas as the role of Yoo Shi Jin (played by Song Joong Ki) led many female viewers to fall in love with South Korean soldiers. This drama was also well-received overseas as Song Joong Ki rose as the most popular Hallyu celebrity.

In fact, Song Joong Ki's role was first offered to Won Bin as the producers believed that Won Bin would look good in the uniform. However, it was revealed that Won Bin had turned down the role because he would have to cut his hair short and had to be overseas for a long period of time. In addition, Won Bin felt overwhelmed that 100% of the drama had to be filmed before airing.

3. 'Train to Busan' - Seok Woo

The most well-known Korean film, which brought the world's attention to K-zombies, is 'Train to Busan.' This horror-action film brought a new light on the Korean zombie film as it impeccably drew out the horror of being stuck in a closed space along with the terror of being in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

The role of Seok Woo (played by Gong Yoo) was first offered to Won Bin. However, Won Bin was said to have turned down the role as he thought the character of Seok Woo was not impressionable despite being the lead.

The other works that Won Bin was known to have turned down are 'The King 2 Hearts' and 'That Winter, the Wind Blows,' the two dramas that had a fair share of their popularity in Korea and overseas. It was also revealed that Won Bin was offered a role in the upcoming drama 'Bulgasal,' which is set to release in early 2022, but the actor also turned down the offer.

The drama 'Bulgasal' will be directed by Jang Young Woo, the co-director of 'Mr. Sunshine,' and written by Kwon So Ra and Seo Jae Won of 'The Guest.' With Won Bin turning down another work, fans might have to wait a bit longer to see their beloved actor back on screen.

Even though it’s been a decade since we saw him in a drama/movie he is still one of my favorite actor ! If he felt too pressured I can only hope that he will chose a project he feels confident enough to act in It ! His wife did say that he was open to proposition so I’m sure the right script will come along !
