Concept

Erythropoiesis is the process that produces red blood cells.

Stages of erythropoiesis are

  • Basophilic normoblast (early normoblast)
  • Polychromatic normoblast (intermediate normoblast)
  • Orthochromatic normoblast (late normoblast)

Explanation-

Intermediate normoblast

  • It is also known as Polychromatic normoblast.
  • It is the last precursor cell capable of mitosis and is smaller than the basophilic erythroblast.
  • The cytoplasm appears greyer due to the presence of haemoglobin.
  • In this stage, Cell is smaller.
  • The nucleus is present in this stage.
  • Haemoglobin appears in this stage

Additional Information

  Late Normoblast stage

  • It is also known as Orthochromatic erythroblast.
  • It is incapable of cell division.
  • Slightly larger than a mature erythrocyte.
  • It contains a small dense nucleus

Early Normoblast stage

  • It is also known as the Basophilic erythroblast.
  • It is smaller than the proerythroblast.
  • It is having a smaller nucleus and more basophilic cytoplasm.
  • It is involved in the production of haemoglobin.

Reticulocyte stage

  • It is also known as Polychromatophilic erythrocyte.
  • It is formed when the nucleus is extruded from the normoblast.
  • It contains some ribosomes and therefore retains a slight basophilic stain.
  • Cells can carry oxygen and enter the bloodstream and are found in low concentrations in normal blood
