Lili Taylor awaits her baby girl, speaks about lack of preparation

Actress Lili Taylor, 40, recently sat down with h monthly to discuss her latest projects and upcoming motherhood — she and longtime boyfriend, author Nick Flynn, 47, expect their daughter this month. In her 8th month of pregnancy at the time of the interview, Lili discusses her biological clock, why she’s glad she got pregnant before her ‘body said ‘uh-uh,” and lack of baby preparation.

On her biological clock:

There is that. That is a factor, and I guess I didn’t realize how muchof a factor that is. [laughs] I don’tknow, it’s funny, I think women are in a new territory.

I felt that thebiological clock was some myth to keep me from doing what I wanted todo. And so I rebelled against it in the 90’s, I thought it was a backlashor some sort of faulty data. But it’s real. I’m glad I woke up beforemy body was just like ‘uh-uh.’

When we were filming I wasn’t trying [to get pregnant], but I wasdancing around it.

Evolutionary-wise, we’re supposed to have themearlier, but I just don’t know if that’s still the same, I don’t knowif our bodies have caught up to the new kind of deal. Women are workinglonger and wanting to have kids later. Maybe in 1,000 years our bodieswill catch up.

On names for their daughter:

We’ve got a couple of names, but we probably need to amp that up this month, probably need to get moving on that one.

On if she and Nick are prepared:

Not really, no. I’m just trying to take it easy. We’re both just takin’it easy, not getting too crazy, ‘cause it’s crazy enough, you don’tneed to make it anymore crazy than it already is.

People have beendoing this for awhile, so there’s a little bit of something behind meand I can kinda just rest on that. I’d rather not prepare too muchbecause I just feel like any plans I’m going to make will be foiled.

Man, right now I’m using her room to sand wood in. I’m just trying to get that room swept up!

On the first public place she hopes to take her daughter:

I love Central Park, I spend a lot of time in there, I try and get in there whenever I can.

On balancing family life with acting work:

I probably was a little worried about it. It’s very unknown. I don’thave any idea how it’s going to evolve. But I know I see other women doit and I know that they seem to become much fuller people as well aswonderful mothers, and it only seems to deepen their relationship totheir work, so I’m hoping that happens.

I don’t think I’ll take a year off…I’m preparing to goback to work in May.

On her parenting ideals:

I could pontificate about all the things I think are important, thingsI would like to do but they would just be cold theories.

I have afeeling I’ll only figure it out through experience. Two things I’mtrying to work on are openness and flexibility.
